The 6th Basic Food Group

  • Posted on January 22, 2011 at 10:18 am

When someone mentions the 5 basic food groups we automatically think about nutrition for every other organ in our body, but what about nutrition for our mind?  Yes, that is right. Our mind needs to be nourished on a daily basis as well.  Just like we have 5 basic food groups in our daily diet, it is safe to say that my daily diet actually consists of 6 basic food groups, with the 6th being books. Reading is an excellent source of daily nourishment for our minds.

I would bet it comes as no surprise that my favorite thing to do is read.  When I was a child I could mostly be found sitting somewhere reading a book in my own little world.  I really believe that a good book should take you somewhere other than where you are, somewhere outside of yourself.   I have always been able to count on books to take me where I might only be able to go in my mind,  as an escape from the everyday grind.  I just finished the first book of a Trilogy, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I cannot even begin to explain how I devoured that book. I could not put it down.  I actually sat on the couch for two days and it was so amazing that, when I was reading, it was like there was noone or nothing around me.  The pages of that story just led me to places where I could imagine being right there with those characters.  In my opinion, that is what makes a good author.

Of course, my husband is not a reader, so he cannot wrap his head around how I can totally tune everything and everybody out when I read.  “Yes, honey, books are my second husband.”  I need to read to survive.  If I have to give up something in my day, it is not going to be reading.  If I am not reading something on a daily basis, I feel like something is missing from my day.

With that said, I am beyond excited to be able to soon introduce my first children’s book to you. I hope that my new children’s series, to be released later this year, will be able to take your child to a place of true imagination and  be a catalyst for them to want to go outside of their world. Writing children’s books has been a longtime dream, a 5 year process, and a goal that has been well-worth pursuing; and, I will have so many more years of satisfaction from bringing these stories of fun and humorous adventure into your child’s life.

Whatever your choice of reading, I hope that it nourishes your mind in every way. I would really love to hear how and where reading has taken you.  Please post and let me know as I will be on the lookout.

I look forward to sharing with you my favorite books and authors, my favorite children’s books, humorous stories, and any new announcements regarding my book release and upcoming events. I hope you will join me in my journey.
